But the second I pushed open the backyard gate, something hit me so violently that I stopped breathing.
The smell.
It wasn’t just unpleasant — it was overwhelming. Thick. Sour. Sickening. Like a forgotten carcass baking under the sun for days.
My stomach instantly turned.
An icy wave crawled up my spine.
I covered my nose and looked around, convinced some animal had died nearby. Maybe a rat under the bushes… maybe something larger. The odor was so intense it felt almost physical, coating the inside of my throat with a bitter metallic taste.
Then I saw movement.
Right beside the flowerbed.
Something on the ground… twitching.
My body locked up.
At first, my brain refused to understand what I was looking at.

Lying among the damp soil and fallen leaves was a grotesque reddish mass — wet, swollen, strangely shiny. It looked unnatural, almost obscene, as though something living had been ripped apart and turned inside out.
I instinctively took several steps back.
My pulse exploded in my ears.
«What the hell is THAT?»
The object looked soft, slimy… disturbingly organic. Flies buzzed around it. The stench coming from it was unbearable — rotten, warm, nauseating.
For a terrifying second, my imagination completely spiraled out of control.
A parasite?
Some unknown creature?
The remains of an animal dragged into the yard overnight?
Or something far worse?
I couldn’t stop staring.
Fear and disgust battled inside me. Every instinct screamed at me not to get closer… yet I couldn’t walk away.
My hands were shaking as I pulled out my phone.
I snapped several photos from a distance, trying not to gag from the smell.
Then I rushed back inside.
The entire time, one horrible thought kept pounding inside my head:
What if this came from something alive?
I opened my browser and started typing frantic combinations of words:
«red slimy mass in yard…»
«rotting red discharge strange smell…»
«fleshy organism garden…»
The search results grew stranger… darker… more disturbing.
My heart sank lower with every image.
Then suddenly — one result appeared.
I clicked.
And instantly wished I hadn’t.
The explanation was so disgusting… so unexpected… that my hands literally went cold.
The moment I realized what I had actually found lying beside my flowers… genuine horror washed over me.
Because this wasn’t some alien organism.
It wasn’t a mutant insect.
And it definitely wasn’t what I had been desperately hoping it was.
The truth was far more disturbing than anything my imagination had created.
