Ich war gerade einmal 18 Jahre alt, als mein 58-jähriger Chef mich bat, nach Feierabend zu ihm in die Küche des Restaurants zu kommen. Ich dachte, er wollte mir endlich das Geld auszahlen, das er mir noch schuldete. Doch kaum hatte ich die Küche betreten, schloss er hinter mir die Tür ab.

Meinem eigenen Sohn, seiner Frau und ihren drei Kindern gab ich genau 24 Stunden Zeit, um ihre Sachen zu packen und mein Haus für immer zu verlassen. Keine Ausreden, keine Bitten. Ich weigerte mich, meine Entscheidung zu ändern.

Meine Mutter hatte mich schon als kleines Kind immer vor einer Sache gewarnt: „Steig niemals allein mit deinem Großvater in ein Boot. Es muss immer noch jemand dabei sein!“
