But the worst part was not the silence itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The worst part was Carla \u2014 my stepmother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was as if my father\u2019s death hadn\u2019t changed anything inside her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the funeral, while relatives cried and I struggled to remain standing, she stood there with perfect hair and not a single tear. Those are Dad\u2019s things!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She sighed heavily, as if my reaction annoyed her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s not coming back for them. Don\u2019t turn him into some guardian angel. Stop acting like a pathetic orphan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those words shattered me completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And at that exact moment, there was a knock at the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unexpected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carla set her coffee cup down irritably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly, red and blue lights flashed through the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A police car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I watched her face change instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time in all this class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDoes Mrs. Miller live here?\u201d he asked formally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carla swallowed nervously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
